Help with taxes?

my husband and i filing together would end up owing $900 so we filled separate and i owe $1200 federal, and am getting no state return. my husband is getting a small return, federal 300, state 120. his job sent him a letter to redo his w4 because they say he has 7 or more exemptions. we dont understand that at all.
