I drive a 1994 sunfire, lately its been refusing to shift down after a trip, has anyone else had this trouble?

example i drive 20 miles to a city and 20 miles back at 65mph on the way back i attempt to slow down and stop at a stop sign and it starts to vibrate and then die like its not shifting out of overdrive or high gear, if i pull to the side of a road let it sit for a few mins it normally starts back up again.
